Here is what I built in sept this year. Prices may have come down since then. It can runs anything at max settings (BF3, Skyrim etc).

I'm sure some of the TG computer gurus like Mely and Nalfen may be able to add their input also.

You can save ~$120 by getting a regular old hard drive, but I must say the SSD is lifefchanging, computer boots up in seconds.

Got everything from newegg except the SSD, was cheaper on Amazon.

1 x ($144.99) MB MSI|P67A-GD55 (B3) P67 LGA1155 R

1 x ($18.99) DVD BURNER LITE-ON | IHAS124-04 % - OEM

1 x ($32.99) MEM 2Gx2|G.SKILL F3-12800CL9D-4GBXL

1 x ($219.99) CPU INTEL|CORE I5 2500K 3.3G 6M R

1 x ($59.99) PSU ROSEWILL| RG630-S12 630W RT

1 x ($39.99) CASE ROSEWILL | BLACKBONE RT

1 x ($169.99) VGA ZOTAC|ZT-40408-10P GTX460 1G R

Subtotal: $686.93

1 x ($178.49)"OCZ Technology 120 GB Agility 3 SSD- 3G SATA 6.0 Gb-s 2.5-Inch Sold State Drive AGT3-25SAT3-120G"

grand total: $865.42

Will also need a copy of windows 7 64 bit if you dont have one already.

Here's a dumb question for you Elas.

I am thinking about an upgrade to my existing PC with a new motherboard, processor and video cards. I know which video cards will fit into my current case (without having to modify the size of the opening), but is there a "size" to motherboards? Meaning can any MB fit into the current space?

Most consumer level motherboards should fit, as long as you stay away from server boards or mini etc it's pretty standard.

What you want to make sure however is that the power supply connectors will match (unless you plan on also changing it). I assume you also have sata HDD but if you are still using IDE (no idea how old your setup is) you will have a very hard time finding a board that still have connectors for those.

Also i know you are using an alien ware case. Check if the back plate? (the metal plate around the connectors in the back) is removable, because if it is not you might have a problem finding a motherboard with the exact same component distribution. Pretty much all cases have removable back plates.

Thanks Nalf, how do I tell if it's HDD or IDE?

I am weighing my options of upgrading versus buying a new one. My current processor is a 2.4Ghz quad core and the MB is a" EVGA NForce 680I SLI MB REV D". I was told by Alienware that my PC could only handle up to GForce 9800 video cards but an upgrade beyond that required a MB upgrade.

The back panel on the case is removeable, and will have to be modified slightly to handle a newer set of HD video cards.

Its SATA vs IDE for the Hard Drive (HDD). Sata is modern IDE is the old standart.

Here is what the cables for each looks like
SATA cable: http://images.maplin.co.uk/full/a13_14az.jpg
IDE cable: http://www.pcguide.com/ref/hdd/if/ide/z_000553idecable80.jpg

For the upgrade itself it depends on your budget, i usually build excellent gaming Pc's for around 1k$ if your upgrade is close to that price you're better off going for a new one.

Ah I got it.

I have a Seagate 500GB Sata 7200 RPM drive. I am hoping that is sufficient, but if I should change that out, let me know. I am going to pull the original specs to see if I have an extra dock for perhaps a second hard drive and if I can, maybe add a small solid state down the road.

Mostly I am trying to figure out the cost versus building a new one, or slowly upgrading this one. As you said, there's not much point in sinking $1000 into a 4 year old system if I can get a new one for that.

Thanks Nalf

Awesome thanks for the tips. I however can not do it just yet due to not having a few hundred dollars to drop.

The ability lag/frame rate has got bad enough for me on tatooine that I really am not enjoying playing at the moment.

I am currently not planning on subbing for the next month unfortunately.

Hopefully I can play this game or another with you guys again soon as I do miss my tg family.

Also at least a few of you have my vent info, I know nalf does and it might still be in the sticky. Feel free to drop in anytime I still use it when playing LoL with friends pretty regularly.

That HDD is fine, a decent Solid state might help and you can use the 500 GB for data storage. You have the slots for it that's sure

Okay another quick question. I am currently running dual GeForce 8800 GT 512 MB video cards. I want to upgrade but am finding many of the new cards take up 2 slots rather than one.

If I am looking at video cards, will the "low profile" models take up only one slot? Or is there a way to see in the specs which ones will fit? I am just wondering if this would make more sense than trying to have the case modified.

Thanks,
Jeanne

When you remove both 8800 from your Pc you should have 2 slots open no ?

Best bang for your $$$ right now would be a GTX560 ti

I got the feeling that a fair amount of us will move to Diablo 3 when it comes out.

Yeah let's get lvl 50 and see what we can do with what we got. But I got the feeling that we don't have enough DPS. I think I should have rolled a Sentinel instead of a Guardian
